I was the senior member of the SERCO team providing support to the Compton Telescope (COMPTEL) group at the Space Science Department (SSD) of the European Space Agency. My responsiblities were exceptionally diverse, reflecting the extreme complexity of the COMPTEL instrument. I acted as an interface between the scientists and technical support staff.
I was responsible for the routine processing of data on COMPTEL and chaired internal technical group meetings. I derived the calibration matrix currently used for Gamma-ray burst (GRB) analysis, & designed significant sections of the COMPTEL Processing & Analysis Software System (COMPASS). COMPASS makes extensive use of the ORACLE DBMS, & I am developed SQL, C, & Pro-FORTRAN tools to decrease the time required by routine tasks.
We moved COMPTEL analysis from an IBM VM/CMS environment to Sun SPARCstations. I managed the installation of software on to the Suns, and the development of transparent communication between the Sun and IBM. Together with the system manager I organised maintenance & upgrades to our computer equipment.
