Astronomical Databases

This page provides access to a large number of Telnet and WWW based servers.

WWW-based Servers

Compton Gamma Ray Observatory Science Support Center (COSSC)
Provides access to the various instruments' data archives, etc.
Astronomical Data Center (ADC)
Provides access to a whole collection of astronomical data in machine-readable form via e-mail.
The European Space Information System (ESIS)
Has now started a WWW service with access to their integrated database and bibliographic service.
High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC)
Now has a forms-based WWW server that lets you search high energy databases by coordinates or name.
NRAO VLA Sky Survey
Provide information on what will (eventually) be a survey down to -40 deg declination at 1.4 GHz.
Skyview Sampler
allows you to retrieve FITS images of any section of the sky from a wide variety of all-sky surveys (from the radio to X-ray part of the spectrum).
United Kingdom ROSAT Data Archive Centre (UKRDAC)
provides information about the UK ROSAT data archive.
The Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
provides a wealth of astronomical data to the scientific community in electronic form. Currently the main emphasis is on the Abstract Service, including links to scanned images of articles appearing in ApJL and ApJ.
ROSAT database
HEASARC version (see below for telnet access to HEASARC and MPE versions).

Telnet-based Servers

APM Sky Catalogue
allows you to make finding charts from the APM data. Once logged in, 'TYPE APM3_RECIPE' will give instructions on how to produce PS file finding charts.
ESIS Integrated Database
Provides an X-windows interface (after an initial telnet login -- Username=astronomy, password=evalme; remember to type 'xhost +esis.esrin.esa.it' in your console first) to a whole slew of ast'xhost +esis.esrin.esa.it' in your console first) to a whole slew of astronomical databases (including Simbad) and data sets.
EXOSAT Database
at ESTEC.
Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database
Produces nice postscript output of selected regions of the sky and e-mails the file to you.
NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database
(otherwise known as NED).
ROSAT database
MPE version.
