Job vacancies

We are always on the lookout for physicists, astronomers or other scientists with experience in data processing and software development. We currently have a vacancy for a new member of staff to work on the mission planning and scientific operations of the gamma-ray satellite INTEGRAL. The work will take place at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) near Madrid.

INTEGRAL Operations Scientist

The successful candidate will be involved in scientific mission planning, preparing documents for the regular Announcements of Opportunity (AO), assisting the Time Allocation Committee (TAC), and assisting the community to access INTEGRAL data. They would be actively encouraged to collaborate with other ISOC scientists in the exploitation of INTEGRAL data. Depending on the candidate an involvement with the development of the INTEGRAL archive is also possible.

A PhD in astronomy or physics is required, together with several years experience in post-doctoral research in either X-ray or gamma-ray astronomy. Preference will be given to those with previous experience of INTEGRAL data analysis. Technical skills in some of the following would be a strong advantage, but are not necessarily required: Oracle DBA, SQL, Java, C-shell, Perl. A knowledge of scientific data archives, either as a developer or an expert user, would also be an advantage.

The selected candidate must be willing operate in a team environment. Good interpersonal and communication skills are necessary. The candidate should be comfortable in an international working environment and be fluent in English, the working language of ESAC.
