Computing Experience

The majority of my experience has been on Sun (SunOS), VAXen (VMS), & IBM (CMS), and I have also used CDC (NOS), FUJITSU (TSS), PDP (RSX) & GEC 4080 machines. I have extensively used FORTRAN 77 (the dominant high-level language in the academic sector) and more recently C, SQL, & Pro-FORTRAN. I have also used BAMBI (a BASIC derivate) to write small data aquisition programs. I have used a wide variety of micro computers, & have taught 6502 assembler, FORTRAN 77, & C-shell, to undergraduates. I am familiar with ESA software standards.

I have expertise in the use of a large number of software applications & libraries, both commercial software (e.g. ORACLE/SQL, IDL, NAG) & astrophysics packages (e.g. SLALIB, IRAF). I have exploited much of the CERN software library (e.g HBOOK, GEANT ) in an astrophysical context.

I have been system manager of a VAX 11/750 system, and represented both the Imperial College Astrophysics Group & the Leicester University X-ray Astronomy Group on Area Management Committees of the STARLINK VAX network, & on departmental computing committees.
